چکیده

Categorization and analogical reasoning are two important cognitive processes, for which there exist formal counterparts (at least they may be regarded as such): namely, formal concept analysis on the one hand, and analogical proportions (modeled in propositional logic) on the other hand. This is a first attempt aiming at relating these two settings. The paper presents an algorithm that takes advantage of the lattice structure of the set of formal concepts for searching for analogical proportions that may hold in a formal context. Moreover, properties linking analogical proportions and formal concepts are laid bare.

Analogical Proportions and the Factorization of Information in Distributive Lattices

Analogical proportions are statements involving four entities, of the form ‘A is to B as C is to D’. They play an important role in analogical reasoning. Their formalization has received much attention from different researchers in the last decade, in particular in a propositional logic setting. Analogical proportions have also been algebraically defined in terms of factorization, as a generali...

Picking the one that does not fit - A matter of logical proportions

Quiz or tests about reasoning capabilities often pertain to the perception of similarity and dissimilarity between situations. Thus, one may be asked to complete a series of entities A, B, C by an appropriate X, or to pick the one that does not fit in a list. It has been shown that the first problem can receive a solution by solving analogical proportion equations between the representations of...

Analogical Learning and Formal Proportions: Definitions and Methodological Issues

Analogical learning is a two-step inference process: (i) computation of a mapping between a new and a memorized situation; (ii) transfer from the known to the unknown situation. This approach requires the ability to search for and exploit such mappings, which are based on the notion of analogical proportions, hence the need to properly define these proportions, and to efficiently implement thei...

From Formal Concepts to Analogical Complexes

Reasoning by analogy is an important component of common sense reasoning whose formalization has undergone recent improvements with the logical and algebraic study of the analogical proportion. The starting point of this study considers analogical proportions on a formal context. We introduce analogical complexes, a companion of formal concepts formed by using analogy between four subsets of ob...

Comparing competing views of analogy making using eye-tracking technology

We used eye-tracking to study the time course of analogical reasoning in adults. We considered proportions of looking times and saccades. The main question was whether or not adults would follow the same search strategies for different types of analogical problems (Scene Analogies vs. Classical A:B:C:D scene version of A:B::C:D). We then compared these results to the predictions of various mode...
